K-Sonar is a spatial sensor using ultrasonic echolocation bio – acoustic KASPA technology especially created for use by blind persons in order that they may ‘use sound to see with’. This is now called ‘sonocular perception.’

Using the device, either alone or attached to a long cane the traveller can build up a sound picture of the surrounding area. This enhances the travel experience and improves the ability of the traveller in terms of obstacle detection.

With training and experience the K-Sonar will facilitate the location of obstacles to a distance of up to twenty feet, and will give information about the nature of those obstacles. The K-Sonar will also enable users to make accurate judgements about the distance they are from doors and other environmental features.

Skills are attained by learning to interpret the range of sounds emitted by the K-Sonar, and using the device increases the ease with which the traveller detects drops. In this case the K-Sonar is used in conjunction with the long cane, but the increased knowledge that the user has about the surrounding environment is an additional safety measure.

The K-Sonar is a significant and important development in technology, designed to facilitate independent travel for blind people.

K-Sonar comes complete with headphones, power adaptor, instruction audio cassette and quick start instructions.
